Artificial turf never pays for itself here
Turf costs $22,518 more to install than sod, and the lawn costs $376 a year in water and fertiliser. On water alone that is a payback in year 60, which is not a payback. What turf actually buys is the 202 hours behind a mower — and you would have to value those at $74.38 an hour for the sums to come out level.

Worth knowing
- Artificial turf comes in 15 ft rolls with the pile lying one way, so every piece has to run in the same direction and an offcut cannot be turned round to fit. Running the strips along the 35 ft side wastes 0%; the other way round it would be 29%. It is the same product and the same yard.
- Watering costs assume 1.25 in a week over a 32 week season, which is what the grass needs rather than what a timer usually delivers. Half of all landscape irrigation is estimated to be wasted to overwatering, wind and runoff, so a real bill is often well above this figure — and that gap is the single largest variable in the comparison below.

The short version
- Sod is bought by the pallet, not by the square foot, and a pallet covers 400 to 500 ft² depending on the farm.
- Artificial turf comes in 15 ft rolls with a pile direction — offcuts cannot be turned round, so which way you run the strips decides the waste.
- Artificial turf does not pay for itself on water at normal American prices — it buys back hours, not dollars, and the calculator prices both.
- The seed rate is a property of the species, and it varies by a factor of five between the grasses on this page.
This page prices the same piece of ground three ways, because the question people actually have is not “how much sod do I need” — it is whether to lay a lawn at all.
The headline is the cheapest of the three over 20 years, and underneath it the crossover year: how long artificial turf takes to catch up with a living lawn at your own water price. That figure moves enormously between a city with cheap water and one without, which is exactly why every article claiming turf pays for itself in seven years is quoting somebody else’s water bill.

Worked through — A 60 × 35 ft lawn is 2,100 ft². In tall fescue at 1.25 in a week over a 32 week season that is 52,332 gallons a year. At $6.50 per thousand gallons it is about $340 a year, every year, before a mower is started.

Sod against seed against artificial turf: what each one really buys
Seed, sod and artificial turf are usually discussed as three prices. They are better understood as three different trades between money, time and patience.
Seed is cheap and slow. A few hundred dollars of seed covers a garden that sod would cost thousands to cover — and you get a thin, vulnerable lawn in six weeks and a real one the following season, assuming the weather cooperates and the birds do not. It is the right answer far more often than it is chosen.
Sod is expensive and instant. You buy a finished lawn, grown for two years on a farm, and lay it in an afternoon. What you are paying for is those two years and the certainty.
Artificial turf is very expensive and permanent-ish. Several times the installed cost of sod, then nothing: no water, no mowing, no fertiliser, no season. And in about 18 years, a disposal problem and the whole bill again.

Sod is bought by the pallet
Sod is quoted per square foot and sold by the pallet, and the two only meet by accident. A pallet covers somewhere between 400 and 500 square feet depending on the farm — and that variation is not standardised, advertised, or the same at the yard down the road.
It matters because you buy whole ones. A 2,400 square foot lawn needs six pallets at 450 square feet and five at 500. Same lawn, same grass, one extra pallet and several hundred pounds of perishable turf you have nowhere to put.

The seed rate belongs to the grass, not to the bag
Every seed calculator on the internet asks for an area and multiplies by a number. There is no such number. A pound of bermuda seed contains something like two million seeds and a pound of tall fescue about two hundred thousand — an order of magnitude — so the rate that gives a proper stand of grass is completely different between them.

Artificial turf: 15 ft rolls that cannot be turned round
Artificial turf is sold by the square foot and delivered in rolls 15 feet wide. That alone would make the waste a question of how your garden divides into fifteen — but there is a second constraint that makes it much sharper.
The pile leans. Every blade lies in the same direction along the roll, and the way light catches it means two pieces laid facing opposite ways are visibly different shades in daylight. So every piece has to run the same way, and an offcut cannot be rotated ninety degrees to fill a gap.
What that leaves you is one decision: which way to run the strips. On a rectangular garden it is worth a great deal.

Worked through — A 60 × 35 ft garden. Run the strips along the 60 ft side and you need 3 strips covering 2,700 ft² — 29 per cent waste on a 2,100 ft² garden. Run them along the 35 ft side instead: 4 strips, 2,100 ft², 0 per cent. Same garden, same product, and the difference is which way the rolls were unrolled.

The other side of that decision is seams. Running the strips the efficient way usually means more of them, and a seam is the detail that separates a professional turf lawn from an obvious one — tape and adhesive under the backing, the edges trimmed between the stitch rows, the pile blended across the join.
It is worth knowing both numbers before the rolls arrive, because after that the decision has been made for you.
What is under artificial turf is a patio
The mistake people make pricing artificial turf is treating it as a covering. It is not: it is a surface laid on a built base, and the base is most of the work.
Under the turf goes 4 inches of compacted crushed aggregate — the same base rock a patio needs, compacted in lifts for the same reason — over a weed barrier, with the existing soil dug out first to make room for it. That is an excavation, a delivery of stone, a plate compactor and the spoil to get rid of.
Skip it and the turf follows every dip and hollow the ground develops, holds water in the low spots, and grows weeds up through the backing from the soil it is lying on.
Under the turf, in order
- Existing grass and soil excavated to the depth of the base plus the turf.
- Sub-grade compacted and graded to fall, because turf does not drain sideways.
- Weed barrier over the sub-grade, under the stone.
- 4 in of crusher run laid in lifts and compacted — ordered loose, since it loses about a fifth of its volume.
- A thin screeded layer to take out the last irregularities, exactly as under pavers.
- Turf rolled out all the same way, left to relax in the sun before it is cut and seamed.
- Infill brushed in at 1.5 lb per ft², in passes, brushing the pile up as you go.
- Perimeter nailed or edged, because the edge is where it lifts.

An inch of water over a thousand square feet is 623 gallons. It is a conversion rather than an estimate — a thousand square feet an inch deep is 83.3 cubic feet, and a cubic foot is 7.48 gallons — and it is the number the whole turf-versus-lawn question rests on.
A grass wanting an inch and a quarter a week across a thirty-week season needs about thirty-seven inches of water a year that the sky may or may not provide. Over two thousand square feet, that is roughly 47,000 gallons.
What it costs depends entirely on where you live, and the spread is enormous — from about three dollars per thousand gallons in parts of the country with plentiful supply to fourteen or more where it is scarce, before any drought surcharge. Which is why the calculator asks for your rate instead of assuming one.
It is also why the arithmetic disappoints. Even at the expensive end of that range, a two-thousand-square-foot lawn costs a few hundred dollars a year to water — against a difference of twenty thousand or more to install artificial turf. The water bill is real, and it is nowhere near large enough to close that gap inside the life of the turf.

Warm season, cool season, and the band in between
Grasses divide into two families that want opposite things, and no amount of care moves one into the other’s territory.
Cool-season grasses — fescue, bluegrass, ryegrass — grow hard in spring and autumn and suffer in high summer heat. They stay green through a cold winter.
Warm-season grasses — bermuda, zoysia, St. Augustine — grow through heat that would flatten a fescue, and go completely brown and dormant as soon as it turns cold. That dormancy is normal and it is not a problem, though it is a surprise to anyone who has moved south.
Between them runs the transition zone, a band across the middle of the country where summers are too hot for one family and winters too cold for the other. There is no grass that is simply right there. Tall fescue and zoysia are the two that cope, and every lawn in that band is a managed compromise.

The calculator reads your state and says whether the grass you have chosen is in the right half of the country. It is a rough check — California alone spans several climate zones — but it catches the expensive mistake, which is watering a bluegrass lawn through a Texas summer.
The ground decides whether any of it takes
Sod, seed and turf all fail the same way, and it has nothing to do with the product. It is the six inches underneath.
Sod laid on compacted clay roots into the top half inch and then stops. It looks perfect for three weeks — it is, after all, finished grass — and then browns in patches as the roots find nothing to go into. Seed broadcast onto the same ground mostly does not germinate, and what does is washed into the low spots by the first rain.
The preparation is unglamorous and it is the job: strip what is there, break up the compaction, bring in screened topsoil if the soil is poor, rake it level, firm it lightly, and only then lay anything on it.
Before anything goes down
- Existing grass and weeds removed, not buried — a layer of dying turf is a poor rooting medium and it settles.
- Compaction broken up to four inches or so; a rotavator on a small garden, a machine on a large one.
- 2–3 in of screened topsoil where the soil is thin, poor or full of builder's rubble.
- Graded away from the house, and the low spots filled rather than hoped about.
- Raked to a fine, level finish and firmed lightly — footprints mean it is too soft.
- Starter fertiliser worked into the surface before sod or seed goes on.
- Water available and ready. New sod needs soaking daily for the first fortnight and there is no negotiating it.
What sod installation costs per square foot
About $2.70 a square foot laid — $5,667 for the 2,100 ft² lawn this page opens with. And the split is the thing to look at before choosing between sod, seed and artificial: $1,782 of it is the grass and $3,885 is the work.
That ratio is why seed looks so much cheaper and so often is not. The grass is the cheap part of all three options. Stripping what is there, grading it, bringing in topsoil and preparing a surface flat enough to lay on happens identically whichever you choose, and it is most of the bill every time.
Which means the real comparison is not $2.70 against seed at a few cents a square foot. It is $2.70 against the same groundwork plus seed, plus a season of watering, plus the odds of having to do it again.
Five ways this goes wrong
01Ordering sod by the square foot
It is sold by the pallet, and a pallet is 400 to 500 ft² depending on the farm. The rounding is invisible until the delivery arrives and there is a pallet too many on the drive.
Instead — Ask the farm what their pallet covers before you order, and see the overage in the shopping list rather than after.
02Using one seeding rate for every grass
Tall fescue wants five times what bermuda does. One number produces either a bare lawn or a great deal of wasted seed, and both look like bad luck rather than bad arithmetic.
Instead — Take the rate from the species, and use the overseeding rate if there is already a lawn there.
03Pricing artificial turf as a covering
Underneath it is an excavation and a compacted stone base — the same base a patio needs. That work is most of the installed cost and all of whether it stays flat.
Instead — Price the base, the excavation and the spoil separately, and decide on the full figure.
04Laying turf strips whichever way is convenient
The pile has a direction, so pieces cannot be rotated to fit. Choosing the wrong run can waste a third of the material on a garden that would otherwise waste none.
Instead — Check both orientations before ordering. It is the only free decision in an artificial lawn.
05Laying anything on unprepared ground
Sod roots half an inch into compaction and then browns in patches; seed washes into the hollows. Both look like a product problem and neither is.
Instead — Strip, break up the compaction, topsoil if needed, rake level, firm, then lay. It is most of the work and all of the result.

Seeding rates, weekly water requirements, season length and annual nitrogen come from turfgrass extension guidance for the states each species is actually grown in, taken at the middle of the published range. Three assumptions worth stating. The water figure is what the grass needs, not what an irrigation system delivers, so it is a floor rather than a forecast. Mowing is reported as hours and deliberately not converted into money — what your Saturday is worth is not a calculator’s decision. And replacing artificial turf at the end of its life is costed as the turf and the labour to lay it, but not the base, which survives.

The words on a landscaping quote
Pallet coverage and pile direction are the two that change the order; the rest is agronomy.
- Pallet
- The unit sod is actually sold in. It covers between 400 and 500 square feet depending on the farm, weighs over a ton wet, and you buy whole ones — which is why the order is almost never the size of the lawn.
- Slab
- One cut piece of sod, typically 16 by 24 inches — about two and two thirds square feet. Big rolls are the alternative: two feet wide, twenty-five feet long, and laid by machine.
- Cool-season grass
- Fescue, bluegrass and ryegrass. They grow in spring and autumn, go dormant in high summer heat, and are the right choice from the middle of the country northwards.
- Warm-season grass
- Bermuda, zoysia and St. Augustine. They grow through the heat and go brown and dormant as soon as it turns cold, which is a seasonal fact rather than a problem.
- Transition zone
- The band across the middle of the country where summers are too hot for cool-season grass and winters too cold for warm-season grass. Every choice there is a compromise; tall fescue and zoysia are the usual two.
- Overseeding
- Sowing seed into an existing lawn to thicken it rather than starting from bare ground. It takes roughly half to two thirds of the new-lawn rate, and it is a different job with different expectations.
- Starter fertiliser
- A high-phosphorus feed applied at seeding or sodding to push root development rather than leaf. It is the one fertiliser application that genuinely changes whether a new lawn takes.
- Infill
- The silica sand or coated granules brushed into artificial turf after it is laid. It holds the blades upright, weighs the turf down and protects the backing — turf without it lies flat inside a season.
- Pile direction
- The way the blades of artificial turf lean. Two pieces laid facing different ways are visibly different colours in daylight, so every piece has to run the same way and offcuts cannot simply be rotated to fit.
- Seam
- The join between two strips of artificial turf, made with tape and adhesive under the backing. It is the detail that separates a professional turf lawn from an obvious one.
- Evapotranspiration
- Water lost from the soil and through the leaves together. It is what the weekly watering figure is replacing, and it is why a lawn needs more in July than in April.
- Screened topsoil
- Topsoil put through a screen to take out stones and debris. Sod laid on unscreened soil roots unevenly and shows every lump, and seed broadcast onto compacted clay largely does not germinate.

- How much does it cost to install sod?
- Typically $1.50 to $3 per square foot installed, of which the sod itself is usually under half — the rest is stripping what is there, preparing the ground and laying it. Buying the pallets and doing the work yourself brings it to roughly $0.60 to $1.20 a foot, and the labour is genuinely hard: a pallet weighs well over a ton and it all has to be moved by hand.
- How much does artificial turf cost to install?

- Can I lay sod over existing grass?
- No, and it is a tempting shortcut. The new sod roots into whatever is directly beneath it, and a layer of dying grass is a poor, uneven, disease-prone rooting medium that also raises the finished level above your paths. Strip it, or kill it and remove it, then rake to a level seedbed.
- What grass should I plant where I live?
- Warm-season grasses — bermuda, zoysia, St. Augustine — from the southern third of the country; cool-season grasses — fescue, bluegrass, ryegrass — from the middle northwards.
