Reading the result
The short version
- The headline is the net area: everything you added, minus everything you subtracted.
- Under it, the same figure in every unit the job might ask for — square yards, square metres, acres, and linear feet of perimeter.
- Add a depth and you get cubic feet and cubic yards, which is how bulk material is ordered.
- It does not add waste. That belongs to the material, not to the measurement, and hiding it here would be hiding the part most likely to be wrong.
Most square footage calculators ask for one length and one width and hand back one number. That is fine for a rectangle and useless for almost every real room, which has a bay, an island, an alcove, or a stairwell in the middle of it.
This one takes as many areas as the space needs, in four shapes, and lets you mark any of them as something to subtract. The result panel breaks it down area by area, so a transposed dimension shows up as one obviously wrong row instead of quietly inflating the total.

Worked through — An 18 × 14 living room is 252 ft². Add a 6 × 9 alcove (54 ft²) and subtract a 4 × 8 stair opening (32 ft²): 252 + 54 − 32 = 274 ft², which is 30.44 yd², 25.45 m² and 0.0063 acres.
Measuring a room so the number is right
The arithmetic is trivial. Almost every wrong square footage comes from the measuring, and specifically from four habits.
Measure wall to wall, not skirting to skirting. Flooring runs under trim in most installations, and the difference around a room is easily a square foot or two — small, until it is the piece you are short.
Measure at the widest point. Walls bow, especially in older houses. Measure a long wall at both ends and in the middle; if they differ, use the largest and note it, because material has to reach the widest part.
Write each measurement against its shape. Not on a phone note in a column of numbers. A sketch with dimensions on it is what catches a transposed 12 for 21, and it costs nothing.
Measure twice, in the same units. Mixing a measurement in feet-and-inches with one in decimal feet is the classic way to produce a number that is 8 per cent wrong and looks completely plausible.
Before you trust the number
- Every wall measured at its widest, and long walls checked in three places.
- Measurements taken wall to wall, not from the face of the trim.
- A sketch with the dimensions written on it, not a bare list.
- Cut-outs measured too — the island, the stairwell, the chimney breast.
- The total checked against a rough mental estimate: is 274 ft² plausible for this room?
Irregular rooms: divide, never average
The single most expensive habit in measuring is averaging. Faced with a room that is 14 ft wide at one end and 10 ft at the other, the tempting move is to call it 12 and multiply. For a trapezoid that happens to be exactly right; for an L-shape, a bay or a room that steps, it is wrong — and wrong by more the bigger the room gets.
Divide instead. Every real floor plan is a handful of rectangles with the occasional triangle or trapezoid. Four shapes cover essentially everything a house contains.

A circle is the case where intuition fails hardest. A circular patio 20 ft across is 314 square feet; the 20 × 20 square it sits inside is 400. Treating one as the other buys you 21 per cent too much material, which on a paver patio is real money left on a pallet in the garage.

What to subtract, and what not to
Almost no calculator in this market lets you subtract, which is why almost every result is a gross figure being used as if it were a net one. The rule is simple: subtract anything the material does not go under.
Subtract: a kitchen island or peninsula built on a plinth, a stairwell opening, a chimney breast, built-in cabinetry that sits on the subfloor, a fixed hearth, a column. On walls: window and door openings, when you are working out paint, drywall or siding.
Do not subtract: free-standing furniture, appliances that sit on the finished floor, rugs, or the swing of a door. Flooring runs underneath all of those, and leaving a gap under the fridge is how you discover that the fridge moves.
Square feet, square yards, square metres and acres
The same floor gets quoted to you in different units by different trades in the same week, and the conversions are where confidence outruns accuracy.
The trap is that area conversions are not the same as length conversions. A yard is three feet, so people reach for three — but a square yard is nine square feet, because area scales with the square of length. The same logic makes a cubic yard twenty-seven cubic feet.

One chain by one furlong
All of these follow from one definition: the international agreement that fixes the inch at exactly 25.4 millimetres. Everything else — the foot, the yard, the acre, the square metre equivalence — is arithmetic from there, which is why these numbers do not drift and do not need updating.
When area is not enough
Flooring, paint and tile are bought by area. Everything that goes in a space rather than on it is bought by volume: concrete, gravel, mulch, topsoil, sand. For those, the area is only the first half of the sum.
Put a depth in and the panel adds cubic feet, cubic yards and cubic metres. The cubic yard is the one that matters in practice — it is what a ready-mix plant and a landscape supply yard both quote in, and it is 27 cubic feet, not three.

Worked through — A 274 ft² patio at 4 in: 274 × 0.333 = 91.3 ft³, which is 3.38 yd³ before any waste or compaction allowance.

Half of what a room costs is not sold by area at all. Baseboard, quarter round, transition strips, edging, gutters, fencing and countertop edge banding are all sold by the linear foot — a foot of length with no width involved.
So the panel reports the perimeter next to the area. For a single rectangular room that is all you need. For several areas, read the warning it prints: the perimeter is the sum of each shape’s own outline, and where two areas meet along a shared wall, that wall gets counted twice. Subtract it once before you buy trim.
Triangles and trapezoids do not get a perimeter here, and that is deliberate. Defined by base and height, their sloping sides are genuinely unknown — two triangles with identical base and height can have very different outlines. Returning a plausible number would be worse than returning none.
Why this page does not add waste
Every material calculator on this site adds a waste allowance, shows it, explains it and lets you change it. This one adds nothing, and the omission is the point.
Waste is not a property of the room. It is a property of the material and the way it is laid: tile on a diagonal wastes half as much again as tile laid straight; a hallway full of doorways wastes more flooring than an open room of the same area; a trench wastes concrete that a formed slab does not. A single “add 10 per cent” folded into the square footage would be wrong for all of them and invisible in every one.
So the number this page gives you is the measurement. What you buy is that number plus an allowance that belongs to the material, applied where you can see it — the methodology page sets out why that separation is the whole argument of this site.
Five ways this goes wrong
01Averaging an irregular room
A room 14 ft at one end and 10 ft at the other is not a 12 ft room unless it tapers evenly. For an L-shape or a bay, the average is wrong in both halves and the error grows with the floor.
Instead — Split it into rectangles, triangles and trapezoids and add them. Two extra measurements beat a second trip to the yard.
02Confusing square yards with three square feet
A yard is three feet, so three feels right. A square yard is nine square feet, because area scales with the square — and the same mistake makes a cubic yard 27, not 3.
Instead — Divide square feet by 9, and cubic feet by 27. The conversion panel does both for you.
03Using the gross area to buy material
The measurement wall to wall includes the island, the stairwell and the chimney breast. Buying against it means paying for material that will never be laid.
Instead — Subtract what the material does not go under — but leave furniture and free-standing appliances in.
04Measuring to the trim instead of the wall
Flooring runs under the skirting in most installations, so the area you need is slightly larger than the visible floor.
Instead — Measure wall to wall. If the trim is staying, the extra inch each side is still material you need.
05Treating a round area as the square it sits in
A 20 ft circle is 314 ft²; the 20 × 20 square around it is 400. That is 21% of a pallet of pavers you did not need.
Instead — Use the circle shape. Radius squared times pi, with the radius being half the diameter you actually measured.
How the calculator works it out

The units you will be quoted in
Seven units for the same room, depending on who is quoting. These are the ones worth being able to tell apart.
- Square foot (ft²)
- The area of a square one foot on each side. The unit almost every US building material is priced and sold in.
- Square yard (yd²)
- Nine square feet, because a yard is three feet and area scales with the square. Carpet and some flooring are still quoted this way.
- Linear foot
- A foot of length, with no width involved. Trim, fencing, gutters and countertop edging are sold by the linear foot — which is why the perimeter matters as much as the area.
- Board foot
- A volume, not an area: 144 cubic inches of lumber, or a piece one foot by one foot by one inch. Rough-sawn hardwood is sold this way and it catches people out constantly.
- Acre
- 43,560 square feet. Historically the area a yoke of oxen could plough in a day, which is why it is not a round number of anything.
- Cubic yard
- Twenty-seven cubic feet, because three feet cubed is twenty-seven. The unit bulk material — concrete, gravel, mulch, topsoil — is ordered in.
- Gross versus net area
- Gross is the footprint measured wall to wall. Net is what is left after subtracting what you are not covering. Materials are bought against net area plus waste, not against gross.
- Heated square footage
- The measure used in US real estate listings: finished, heated living space, excluding garages, porches and unfinished basements. It is not the same number as the area you will floor.
Common questions
- How do I calculate square footage?
- Multiply length by width in feet. A room 18 ft by 14 ft is 252 square feet. For anything that is not a rectangle, split it into shapes you can measure — rectangles, circles, triangles, trapezoids — work each one out and add them together.
- How do I calculate the square footage of an irregular room?
- Divide it into regular shapes rather than averaging. An L-shaped room is two rectangles; a room with a bay window is a rectangle plus a trapezoid. Averaging two different widths gives a number that is wrong in both halves, and the error scales with the size of the floor.
- How many square feet are in a square yard?
- Nine. A yard is three feet, and area scales with the square, so a square yard is 3 × 3 = 9 square feet. Divide square feet by nine to get square yards — the unit carpet is often still quoted in.
- How many square feet are in an acre?
- 43,560 square feet. It is not a round number because the acre predates the metric habit of round numbers: it was the area a yoke of oxen could plough in a day, standardised as one chain by one furlong.
- How do I calculate cubic feet from square feet?
- Multiply the area in square feet by the depth in feet. A 252 ft² floor at 4 inches deep is 252 × 0.333 = 84 cubic feet. Divide by 27 for cubic yards, which is how concrete, gravel, mulch and topsoil are actually ordered.
- How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard?
- Twenty-seven. A yard is three feet, and volume scales with the cube: 3 × 3 × 3 = 27. It is the conversion behind almost every bulk material order in the US.
- What is the difference between linear feet and square feet?
- Linear feet measure length only; square feet measure area. Trim, fencing, gutters and edging are sold by the linear foot, so what you need there is the perimeter — which this calculator gives you alongside the area.
- Should I subtract cabinets and islands from the floor area?
- Subtract anything the material does not go under: a kitchen island on a plinth, a stairwell opening, a chimney breast, built-in cabinetry that sits on the subfloor. Do not subtract furniture, appliances that sit on the finished floor, or door swings.
- Does this calculator add waste?
- No, deliberately. This page gives you the true measured area. Waste depends entirely on the material and the layout — diagonal tile is not straight tile — so it is applied by the material calculator, where it is shown, explained and editable rather than baked into a number you cannot see.
- Why does the calculator not show a perimeter for triangles?
- Because base and height do not determine the sloping sides. Two triangles with the same base and height can have very different outlines. Where perimeter matters, measure the sides directly rather than trusting a figure that cannot be derived.
