Gutter guards are priced by the foot of gutter, and the installation — like cleaning — scales with the height of the ladder. The honest range runs from a few dollars a foot for foam you push in yourself to thirty for a dealer’s micro-mesh system with a warranty. Most quotes include cleaning the gutters first, because guards go on clean. What decides whether they are worth it is the tree over the roof: how often the gutters fill now, and whether the guard actually stops what falls.

Eight kinds, and what each stops
Inserts — foam and brushes — sit inside the gutter; screens and mesh cover it; hoods curl water in round a solid nose; and one-piece hooded gutters replace the gutter altogether. The coarser the guard, the less it stops: big leaves sit on almost anything and blow off, but pine needles, maple seeds and shingle grit go through foam, brush and screen holes and lodge there. Fine stainless micro-mesh is the one that stops them.

Ten years of guards against ten years of cleaning
Guards do not end the cleaning; with the right guard for the trees they cut it to one check a year, slower round the guards than an open gutter. So the arithmetic is the guard plus ten yearly checks, against the cleanings you would otherwise pay for — at the gutter-cleaning page’s prices. Under leafy trees that clean twice a year, mesh comes out about even. Under pines that clean four times a year, micro-mesh is clearly ahead. With no trees over the roof, the gutters wanted one cleaning a year anyway, and guards never catch up.

- A seamless gutter with the hood formed into it, replacing the gutter rather than covering it.
- Shingle grit
- The mineral granules asphalt shingles shed, which pass many guards and settle in the gutter.
