The faucet is the part people spend an hour choosing and it is about half of the bill. The other half is an hour and a half of a plumber on their back under the sink — the old nuts, the supply lines, the sprayer hose round the disposal — and, in an old house, the shutoff valves. Old multi-turn stops seize, or close and then drip, and they are what turns a swap into a longer visit. Changing them while the water is off anyway is the cheapest time to do it.

Count the holes
A faucet has to fit the sink it goes on. Bathroom sinks are drilled single-hole, 4-inch centerset or 8-inch widespread; kitchen sinks and counters have one to four holes for the faucet, a sprayer, a soap pump. Going to fewer holes is free — a deck plate covers the rest. Going to more is a knockout on a porcelain sink, a cored hole in stone or quartz, or a new sink. Counting before buying is the cheapest step in the job.

The tub: trim or valve
A tub or shower faucet is a valve in the wall and trim on the front. If the valve is sound and the new trim is the same make and family, the job is an hour: handle, escutcheon, spout, head. If it is a different make, worn out, or an old two-handle mixer without pressure balance — which the code has required in showers for decades, with a 120°F limit — the valve itself is replaced, and that means reaching it: an access panel from a closet behind the tub, or tile cut out and patched in front.

- A plate under a one-hole faucet that covers unused holes in the sink.

- A kitchen faucet whose spout head pulls out on a hose, weighted to return.
- Trim kit
- The visible parts of a tub or shower faucet — handle, escutcheon, spout, head — that fit a valve in the wall of the same make.
- Pressure-balance valve
- A shower valve that holds the temperature steady when pressure changes elsewhere. Required by code, with a 120°F limit.
- Thermostatic valve
- A shower valve that holds a set temperature directly. The premium version of the same protection.
- Frost-free sillcock
- An outdoor faucet whose valve seat is inside the heated wall, so the pipe outside drains and cannot freeze.
- Pop-up drain
- The bathroom sink drain whose stopper is lifted by a rod behind the faucet. Usually replaced with the faucet.

- How much does it cost to replace a kitchen faucet?
- About $470 for a mid-range pull-down faucet installed by a plumber — $250 of faucet, new supply lines and about 1.5 hours. A basic single-handle faucet is $330, a touchless one $670. If the shutoffs under the sink are seized, changing them while the water is off makes it $570.
- How much does a plumber charge to install a faucet?

- About $245 for a frost-free sillcock installed — $45 for the faucet and the rest the plumber's time through the rim joist. A frost-free one closes inside the heated wall, so the pipe outside is empty in a freeze, and it has the vacuum breaker the code wants on every hose connection.
- Can I replace a kitchen faucet myself?
- Yes: $270 for the faucet and supply lines and about 3 hours with a basin wrench. The hard part is the old nuts under the sink; the risky part is the shutoffs. If they will not close, the house's main goes off and the stops are changed first.
- Should I replace the shutoff valves too?
- If they are the old multi-turn kind and have not been turned in years, yes: they seize, or close and then drip from the stem. With the water off for the faucet anyway, new quarter-turn stops are about $60 each installed.
- What if my new faucet needs a different number of holes?
- Fewer: a deck plate covers the extra holes. More: a porcelain or steel sink may have a knockout; a stone or quartz counter is cored, about $175 — $645 for the kitchen swap. A widespread faucet on a centerset sink needs a new sink.
- How long does a faucet replacement take?
- About 1.5 hours for a kitchen faucet and 1.25 for a bathroom one; an hour for tub trim; three to four for a new shower valve, plus closing the wall. Doing it yourself, twice that.
- Is it worth replacing an old faucet?
- A faucet older than 2014 may contain more lead than today's lead-free limit, and older bathroom faucets flow more than the 1.5 gallons a minute of a WaterSense model. A dripping faucet can often be fixed with a cartridge; one that drips again is worth replacing.
