Sod pallets and seeding rates
What a pallet of sod covers and weighs, and how many pounds of seed per thousand square feet each grass actually wants.

How many pieces of sod are in a pallet, and how much grass seed do I need?
Two questions with the same underlying problem: the unit you buy in is not the unit you measured in. Sod is quoted per square foot and sold by the pallet. Seed is quoted per pound and needed per thousand square feet, at a rate that belongs to the species rather than to the bag.

The consequence of that variation is bigger than it sounds. A 2,400 square foot lawn needs six pallets at 450 ft² and five at 500 — the same lawn, the same grass, and one extra pallet of perishable turf with nowhere to go.
Waste, which is cuts rather than a percentage

The span across that new-lawn column is the point of the table. Tall fescue wants 8 lb per thousand square feet and Bermuda wants 1.5 — a factor of 5.3. A calculator that multiplies your area by one number is wrong for almost everybody who uses it, in one direction or the other.
The reason is seed size. A pound of bermuda contains roughly two million seeds and a pound of tall fescue around two hundred thousand, so the same weight puts down an order of magnitude fewer plants.

Why the last two columns are so far apart
Water prices in the United States vary by a factor of four or five between regions, before any drought surcharge. That single number decides whether artificial turf pays for itself in a decade or never, which is why every article with a confident payback period is quoting somebody else’s water bill.
And these figures are what the grass needs, not what an irrigation system delivers. Around a third of household water in the United States is used outdoors, and roughly half of that is estimated to be lost to overwatering, wind drift and runoff — so a real bill usually sits well above the middle column.
What these rates assume
Seeding rates are for a prepared seedbed at the right time of year — late summer into early autumn for cool-season grasses, late spring into early summer for warm-season ones. Sown at the wrong end of the year, no rate is the right rate. Overseeding figures assume an existing lawn that is thin rather than dead; past about half coverage it is a new lawn and it wants the new-lawn rate.
Nitrogen is the annual total, applied in two to four feeds through the growing season rather than at once.
Using it
