$6.01 per ft². Material is $2,007 and the work $2,324, of which roughly $900 is simply getting a paver and a roller to the house. That figure is the same on a short drive as on a long one, and it is why small asphalt jobs price so badly per square foot.

Worth knowing

  • Asphalt is sold by the ton and laid by the square yard, and the bridge between them is the spread rate: about 111 lb per square yard per inch of compacted depth at 148 lb/ft³. At 2 in a ton covers about 81 ft², which is where the old rule of eighty square feet at two inches comes from.
  • Every depth on this page is COMPACTED. The paver lays it about a quarter thicker than it finishes — 2.5 in loose to end up at 2 — so a screed set to the finished depth leaves you short, and a tonnage worked out from the loose depth over-orders by the same quarter.
  • Sealcoat is a cosmetic and UV coating, not a structural repair. It fills nothing, carries nothing, and applied every year it builds into a brittle skin that cracks off in sheets.

Reading the result

The short version

  • Sold by the ton, laid by the square yard. The bridge is 111 lb per square yard per inch of compacted depth.
  • Every depth is compacted. It is spread about a quarter thicker than it finishes, and confusing the two over-orders by exactly that quarter.
  • Alligator cracking is a base failure, not a surface one. Paving over it buys a season.
  • Sealcoat fixes nothing structural. Every three years is protection; every year builds a brittle skin that peels.

The headline is the tonnage, because that is the unit the plant sells in and the unit the invoice arrives in. Under it is the conversion in both directions — what a ton covers at each depth — which is what most of the searches on this subject are actually asking.

But if there is already a driveway there, the more valuable panel is the second one. The question behind “how much does asphalt driveway repair cost” is not a price, it is a diagnosis: sealing, overlaying and rebuilding are three different jobs with an order of magnitude between them, and which one you need is decided by the base rather than by the surface you can see.

Worked through — A 60 × 12 ft driveway is 720 ft², or 80 yd². At 2 in compacted: 80 × 2 × 111 ÷ 2,000 = 8.8 tons. Checked the other way, one ton covers 81 ft² at that depth, and 720 ÷ 81 is the same 8.8 tons.

Sold by the ton, laid by the square yard

Asphalt is the one material on this site where the unit you buy and the unit you measure have nothing in common. You measure a driveway in square feet. The plant sells by weight. Between them sits a density, and everything about getting the order right is that conversion.

The trade does not do it through cubic feet. It uses a spread rate: pounds per square yard per inch of compacted depth. For hot mix at about 148 pounds a cubic foot, that is 111 — and once you have that number, an area turns into a tonnage in one step.

The familiar rule — “a ton covers eighty square feet” — is the two-inch row of that table, rounded. It is genuinely useful and it is true for exactly one depth. At three inches a ton covers little more than fifty square feet, and quoting the rule at that depth under-orders by a third.

Compacted, loose, and the quarter in between

Every depth in any specification, on this page, and in any quote worth having is the compacted depth: what is there after the roller has finished. The paver does not lay that. It lays about a quarter more, and the roller takes it down.

So a two-inch driveway is spread at roughly 2.5 inches. This matters twice. A screed set to two inches leaves a driveway an inch and a half thick when it is rolled — which is thin enough to matter. And a tonnage worked out from the loose thickness over-orders by the same quarter, which on a modest driveway is two tons of asphalt you have paid to have delivered and nowhere to put.

Order the tonnage from the finished depth. The loose thickness is the paving crew’s problem and they already know it.

Seal it, overlay it, or take it out

As many people search for what asphalt driveway repair costs as for what a new driveway costs, and almost every answer is a range that covers everything from a bucket of sealer to a rebuild. The range is useless because they are three different jobs.

What decides between them is not how bad the surface looks. It is whether the base underneath is still carrying load.

What sealcoat does, and what it does not

Sealcoating is the most oversold operation in residential paving, and it is also genuinely worth doing. Both things are true, and the difference is in what you expect from it.

What it does: it puts a sacrificial coating over the bitumen, which is what ultraviolet light and spilled fuel attack. That slows the oxidation that turns a surface grey and rough. And it makes the driveway black again, which is most of why people buy it.

What it does not do: carry any load, fill any crack of consequence, or fix anything at all beneath the surface. A sealed driveway with a failing base is a failing base with a fresh coat of paint.

And it can be actively harmful. Applied every year — which is what a great many driveways get, because the salesman comes round every spring — it builds into a thick, brittle layer with no flexibility, and that layer cracks and peels away in sheets. Every 3 years or so is protection. Every year is damage.

Before sealing anything

  • The driveway is at least six months old — new asphalt needs to cure and give off its volatiles first.
  • Cracks wider than about 0.5 in routed out and filled, not sealed over.
  • Oil and fuel stains cleaned and primed, or the sealer will not stick to them.
  • Surface swept and washed, and genuinely dry.
  • Two thin coats rather than one thick one, the second crossing the first.
  • No rain forecast for 24 hours and no traffic for 48.
  • The last seal more than two years ago. If it was last year, skip it.

The base, and the water

Asphalt is a flexible pavement. It does not span anything — it spreads load into what is underneath, and if what is underneath moves, the asphalt moves with it and cracks.

Under a residential driveway that means six to eight inches of compacted crushed aggregate, laid in lifts and rolled, on a subgrade that has itself been compacted and graded to fall. It is the same base rock that goes under a patio, for the same reason, and the gravel calculator prices it from the same data.

The failure mode is almost always water. Water in the base softens it, and a soft base under a wheel load is what produces alligator cracking. In a cold climate it also freezes, lifts the pavement and drops it again every winter. Which is why the grade matters as much as the depth: a driveway that sheds water lasts, and one that ponds does not, whatever it was built from.

The base under asphalt is crusher run, ordered by the ton with a compaction allowance — about a fifth more loose volume than the finished depth. The gravel calculator gives the tonnage as an honest range and applies the allowance before you order.

Millings, honestly

Recycled asphalt millings are old pavement ground up and sold back. At roughly a quarter of the price of hot mix they are a real option for a long rural drive, and they are routinely oversold as “asphalt for a fraction of the cost”, which they are not.

What they are: a granular material with some residual bitumen in it that compacts into a firm, dark surface and darkens further as the sun works on it. Laid four inches deep and properly rolled, on a prepared base, it makes a good drive.

What they are not: a bound pavement. There is no binder being reactivated unless the material is heated, so it never achieves the strength or the smoothness of hot mix, and it will always shed some loose material.

The thing nobody mentions is that millings are ungraded. Their composition depends entirely on the road they came from — a supplier who cannot tell you the source and whether the load has been screened is selling you an unknown, and a load with large chunks in it will not compact flat at any price.

Hot mix is a perishable product

Almost every oddity in how asphalt is bought comes from one fact: it is only workable while it is hot. It leaves the plant above 300 °F and it has to be laid, screeded and compacted before it drops below about 185 °F. After that the roller is just driving over it.

That is why you cannot buy a wheelbarrow of it, cannot keep it overnight, and cannot pave half a driveway on Saturday and the rest on Sunday. It is why plants set a minimum load — typically around 3 tons — and why a small job is priced against a crew and two machines rather than against a quantity of material.

It is also why paving is seasonal. On cold ground a thin lift loses its heat in minutes, and the crew runs out of working time before the compaction is finished. Uncompacted asphalt has voids in it, water gets into the voids, and it ravels apart early. Most contractors stop below about 50 °F ground temperature, and they are right to.

Where the money goes

An asphalt quote divides into three: the material, which is tonnage times a price that tracks the oil market; the base and the excavation, which is where the durability is bought; and mobilisation, which buys nothing at all and cannot be avoided.

The material is a smaller share than people expect. On a typical residential driveway the asphalt itself is often under a third of the bill — which is why a contractor who is cheaper is rarely cheaper on material. The saving is in the base depth, the compaction, or the number of lifts, and all three are invisible the day the job is finished.

Only labour is adjusted for where you are. Asphalt price moves with crude oil and with how far the plant is — it cannot travel far before it cools, so haul distance is a genuine constraint rather than a freight line — while the crew rate moves with the local market. The regional price index is what is being applied.

Five ways this goes wrong

  1. 01Working the tonnage from the loose depth

    Asphalt is spread about a quarter thicker than it finishes. Use the loose figure with the compacted density and you over-order by that quarter — on a modest driveway, two tons you cannot return.

    Instead — Take the tonnage from the finished, compacted depth. The spread thickness is the crew's business.

  2. 02Overlaying alligator cracking

    The base under those areas has already failed. A new surface over it flexes in exactly the same places and reappears within a couple of winters, having cost most of what a proper repair would.

    Instead — Cut the failed areas out full depth, rebuild the base, and then overlay the whole surface if the rest is sound.

  3. 03Sealcoating every year

    Sealer has no flexibility once it builds up. Annual coats become a thick brittle skin that cracks and peels off in sheets, which looks far worse than what it was hiding.

    Instead — Every 3 years or so, on a driveway that is at least six months old, with the cracks filled first.

  4. 04Economising on the base rather than the surface

    Asphalt spreads load into what is under it. Four inches of base instead of eight is invisible on the day and is the reason the driveway ruts and alligators where the car sits.

    Instead — Set the base depth from the use and the soil, and compare quotes on the build-up rather than on the finished thickness.

  5. 05Paving late in the year

    On cold ground a thin lift falls below 185 °F before the rolling is done. The result has voids in it, water gets in, and it ravels apart years early.

    Instead — Pave in the warm half of the year. A contractor with availability in November is telling you something.

Compacted density, the spread rate and the lift limits come from the asphalt institute’s construction manual; driveway build-ups, the overlay-versus-reconstruct judgement and the sealcoat interval follow the national paving association’s residential guidance. Three assumptions worth stating. Every depth is compacted, and the loose thickness is shown separately rather than folded in. The tonnage is given as a range across the density band as well as a single figure, because 145 and 150 lb per cubic foot are both ordinary and the difference is real. And the three courses are priced with what each buys in years, because a driveway is paid for over its life and not on the day.

The words on a paving quote

Compacted depth and alligator cracking are the two worth knowing: one decides what you order, the other decides whether you should be ordering at all.

Hot mix asphalt
Aggregate bound with bitumen, mixed and delivered hot. It leaves the plant above 300 °F and has to be laid and compacted before it cools below about 185 °F, which is why it cannot be bought in small quantities or kept for the weekend.
Spread rate
Pounds of asphalt per square yard per inch of compacted depth — about 111 for hot mix. It is the number paving crews work in, and it converts an area straight into a tonnage without going through cubic feet.
Compacted depth
The finished thickness after rolling, and the only depth any specification means. Asphalt is spread roughly a quarter thicker than it finishes, so loose and compacted are two different numbers for the same job.
Lift
One layer laid and compacted in a single pass. Between about 1.5 and 3 inches: thinner and it cools before the roller reaches it, thicker and the roller densifies only the top.
Binder course
The lower, coarser layer in a two-layer build. It provides the structure; the surface course on top provides the finish and the waterproofing.
Tack coat
A thin sprayed bitumen emulsion between an existing surface and a new overlay. Without it the overlay is a separate slab lying on top, and it slides and breaks up at the edges.
Alligator cracking
Interlocking cracks in a pattern like crocodile skin. It is not a surface defect — it means the base beneath has failed under load, and no amount of surfacing fixes it.
Full-depth patch
Cutting out a failed area through the asphalt and into the base, rebuilding the base, and repaving. It is the only repair that addresses the actual cause, and it is the expensive one.
Sealcoat
A coating brushed or sprayed over asphalt to protect it from UV and fuel and to make it black again. It is cosmetic and protective; it carries no load and fills nothing structural.
Millings
Old pavement ground up and reused. Cheap, compactable into a firm surface, and entirely dependent on the road it came off — nobody grades them, so you are buying the supplier's word.
Mobilisation
The cost of getting a paver, a roller and a crew to the site at all. It is the same on a short driveway as on a long one, which is why small asphalt jobs price so badly per square foot.
Ravelling
The surface losing its fine aggregate and going rough and grey as the bitumen oxidises. It is the normal end of a surface course's life and the thing an overlay is for.

How do I calculate asphalt in tons?
Square yards × compacted inches × 111 ÷ 2,000. The 111 is the spread rate — pounds of hot mix per square yard per inch — and it comes from the compacted density of about 148 lb per cubic foot. A 60 × 12 ft driveway is 80 square yards, and at 2 inches that is 8.8 tons.
How much does a ton of asphalt cover?
About 81 square feet at 2 inches compacted, 54 at 3 inches and 108 at an inch and a half. The old rule of "80 square feet at two inches" is this arithmetic rounded, and it stops being true the moment the depth changes.
How do I convert square yards to tons of asphalt?
Multiply square yards by the compacted depth in inches, then by 111, then divide by 2,000. One square yard at one inch is about 111 pounds, so 100 square yards at 2 inches is 11.1 tons. Going the other way, divide the tons by the depth and by 111, then multiply by 2,000.
How much does an asphalt driveway cost?
Usually $4 to $9 per square foot installed for a new driveway with a proper aggregate base, and an overlay on sound pavement runs roughly half that. On a short drive the figure per square foot looks much worse, because getting a paver and a roller to the house costs the same whether you are paving 500 square feet or 5,000.
How much does asphalt driveway repair cost?
It depends entirely on what has failed, which is why a single figure is useless. Crack filling runs about $1.60 a linear foot. Full-depth patching — cutting out a failed area, rebuilding the base and repaving — is around $11 a square foot. An overlay is roughly half the cost of a new driveway. Which one you need is decided by whether the base is sound, not by how bad the surface looks.
How thick should an asphalt driveway be?
Two inches of compacted asphalt over six inches of compacted aggregate for cars on ground that drains; three inches of asphalt over eight of base on clay or where a heavier vehicle parks; four inches for a parking area with delivery vehicles turning on it. The base matters at least as much as the asphalt and it is the layer people economise on.
Can I pave over my existing asphalt driveway?
If the base and the existing pavement are structurally sound, yes — an overlay of an inch and a half on a tack coat is exactly what the surface wearing out calls for, at about half the cost of a rebuild. If there is alligator cracking, the base under those areas has already failed and an overlay reappears in the same places within a couple of winters. Cut those areas out full depth first.
What is alligator cracking?
Interlocking cracks forming a pattern like crocodile skin, usually where vehicles sit or turn. It is fatigue failure: the base underneath has lost its bearing capacity and the asphalt is flexing under each wheel. It is the one defect that tells you the problem is not on the surface, and patching over it achieves nothing.

It gets much harder, and below about 50 °F ground temperature most contractors stop. The mix has to still be above 185 °F when the roller reaches it, and a thin lift on cold ground loses that heat in minutes — so the crew runs out of working time before the compaction is finished, and uncompacted asphalt ravels and fails early. Spring through early autumn is paving season for a reason.
How long does an asphalt driveway last?
Fifteen to twenty-five years if the base was built properly and water drains off it, with an overlay somewhere in the middle of that. Failures are almost always about water getting into the base or a base that was too thin for what parks on it — the asphalt itself is rarely the thing that gave up.
