How we arrived at it — Published loose weights from quarries and landscape suppliers across several regions, expressed as the range they actually span. Density moves with gradation, stone type and — most of all — moisture: the same yard of sand can weigh 2,600 lb dry and over 3,000 lb after rain. Anyone quoting one number for this is hiding a spread you will pay for, so we quote both ends and let the tonnage come out as a range too.

How we arrived at it — Manufacturers publish spread rate for a smooth, sealed, previously painted surface — the best case. How we arrived at it — Thinset coverage is published per trowel notch, not per tile — and the notch is set by the tile size, which is the step everyone skips.
