Where you live decides this more than the price does
If the cost were the only question, asphalt would win everywhere and there would be no argument. It does not, because the two materials fail in opposite conditions.

So: north of the frost line, asphalt. It handles heave, it handles salt, and it clears snow faster. In the hot south, concrete. Asphalt at 140°F of surface temperature takes a permanent impression from a car that sits on it for a fortnight.
In the wide middle of the country either works, and it comes down to what the street looks like and what you want to spend.

What the extra money actually buys
It is not savings, and anyone selling it as savings is selling. Concrete costs more today and more over thirty years. What it buys is real, and it is four things.
The honest case for concrete
- Nothing to do. No sealing, no schedule, no contractor knocking every third spring. For a lot of people that is worth the difference on its own.
- It can be finished. Broom, exposed aggregate, stamped, coloured — concrete has an appearance range asphalt does not have at all.
- It does not soften. No ruts, no heel marks, no tar on the garage floor in August.
- It reflects rather than absorbs, so the driveway and the front of the house stay cooler.
- Resale, in markets where concrete is the norm — which is a local question, not a national one.
And the honest case for asphalt, which is shorter and mostly about money:

- Less than half the price today, and still cheaper after thirty years of upkeep.
- A cheap middle option: resurfacing at about 60 per cent of new, two or three times, before the base ever comes out.
- Repairs blend. A patch in asphalt disappears; a patch in concrete is visible forever.
- It is laid in a day and driveable in two. Concrete is a week before a car goes on it.
- It forgives ground movement, which matters more than anything else where the ground moves.
Four ways this decision goes wrong
01Believing concrete pays for itself
It is repeated everywhere and the arithmetic does not support it. Thirty years out, with asphalt paying for a resurface and seven seal coats, concrete is still 26 per cent more.
Instead — Choose concrete for what it is — maintenance-free and better looking — not on a payback that does not arrive.
02Skimping on the base to afford the surface
Both materials only spread load; the compacted stone underneath carries it. A thin base fails identically under either, and then the surface is the least of the problem.
Instead — Specify the base depth and the compaction, and if the budget is tight, take it out of the surface choice rather than out of the ground.
03Laying asphalt over an old concrete drive
Every joint and crack underneath telegraphs through within two years, because the concrete still moves. The demolition you avoided gets paid for anyway.
Instead — Break it out, or accept reflective cracking as the price of not doing so — and get that in writing before the deposit.
04Sealing new asphalt too soon, or too often
New asphalt needs six to twelve months to cure before its first seal. After that, annual sealing — which is sold hard — builds a brittle film that cracks on its own.
Instead — First coat at six to twelve months, then every three to five years. Anyone offering yearly is selling a product, not a service.
Where these numbers come from
Both sides are computed, not quoted. The asphalt figure comes from the asphalt calculator — tonnage at compacted depth, base stone, and the mobilisation of a paver and a roller, which is roughly $900 of any small job. The concrete figure comes from the concrete slab calculator on its driveway setting — 4 in over a compacted base, reinforced, formed, with the joint grid. Same 60 × 12 ft, same bare ground, same national labour rate.
The thirty-year figures carry two assumptions, stated so you can disagree with them: one asphalt resurface at about 60 per cent of a new driveway around year eighteen, and a seal coat every four years at roughly $145 on this area. Move either and the gap moves, but asphalt stays ahead across any reasonable range — it would take a seal coat every year and two resurfaces to bring them level.

The words on a paving quote
Two worth knowing before comparing quotes: the sub-base, because it is what actually carries the driveway and the place a cheap quote saves money, and resurfacing, because it is the option concrete does not have.
- Hot mix asphalt
- Aggregate bound with bitumen, laid hot and compacted with a roller. It is flexible for its whole life, which is both its great advantage and the reason it ruts.
- Sub-base
- The compacted crushed stone under either surface. It carries the load; the surface only spreads it. A driveway that fails almost always failed here first.
- Lift
- One layer of asphalt laid and compacted in a single pass. A residential driveway is usually a single 2 in lift; a commercial one is two.
- Seal coat
- A bitumen emulsion brushed or sprayed over asphalt every few years. It replaces the binder that ultraviolet light breaks down, and skipping it is what turns a driveway grey and brittle.
- Control joint
- A groove cut or tooled into concrete so that when it cracks — and it will — it cracks along a straight line you chose instead of a jagged one you did not.
- Resurfacing
- A new lift of asphalt over the old one, at roughly 60 per cent of a new driveway. Concrete has no equivalent: when it goes, it is broken out and replaced.
- Frost heave
- Water in the ground freezing, expanding and lifting what is above it. Asphalt flexes and settles back; concrete has one chance and then a crack.
- Rutting
- Permanent depressions where wheels sit. It is an asphalt failure and a hot-climate one — the binder softens and the aggregate moves.
- Stamped concrete
- Concrete pressed with a pattern and coloured. It costs about half again on top of plain concrete and it needs resealing, which removes concrete's main advantage.
- Apron
- The section between the street and the property line. Many jurisdictions require it to be concrete whatever the rest of the driveway is, and some require a permit for it alone.

- Can you put asphalt over concrete?
- You can, and it is a bad idea in most cases. Every joint and crack in the concrete telegraphs through the asphalt within a couple of years, because the concrete underneath still moves. It is done to save demolition and it usually costs the saving back.
- Does a concrete driveway add more value?
- Generally yes, and the gap is mostly about how it looks rather than how it performs. In markets where every driveway is asphalt it adds little; in markets where concrete is the norm, asphalt reads as cheap. That is a local question and an estate agent answers it better than a calculator.
- What about pavers instead?
- Dearer than both — a paver driveway runs well above concrete — and it has one genuine advantage neither has: it can be lifted and relaid. If a utility has to be dug up, or if the ground settles, pavers come up and go back. Concrete and asphalt do not.
- Which one cracks less?
- Neither cracks less, they crack differently. Concrete cracks in lines and keeps working. Asphalt does not crack so much as spread and rut, and its failure is gradual rather than sudden. Judging either by cracks is the wrong test.
- Can I do either myself?
- Realistically, no. Asphalt has to arrive hot and be compacted within a temperature window, which needs a paver and a roller on site the same morning — roughly $900 of the quote is simply getting that equipment to the house. Concrete has to be finished on a clock that starts the moment it leaves the truck. Both are jobs where the skill is in the hour of placing.
